Abstract

The physical environment that students experience in design subjects can have a
profound effect upon their creativity and their performance. However, the design of
the spaces themselves often receives scant attention, and insights from users -
teachers and students- are sometimes not sought (Thoring et al, 2017). The development of a new building for the Cardiff School of Art and Design (CSAD) in
2013 presented us, as users, with a rare opportunity to influence the design of the
building and subsequent learning spaces for students from the outset.
