Abstract
There is a current crisis in leadership, which requires some rapid policy solutions. Across many countries there is, or soon will be, a shortage of head-teachers or principals in the education system. In addition, there is a widespread reluctance from those in other formal leadership positions to take on the role of head or principal. In economic terms, we have a serious supply-side problem. This could be resolved by seeking additional expertise from other sectors or by stretching the existing leadership resource in schools even further. Both these solutions are currently being contemplated.
