Abstract

Positive team dynamics are a fundamental attribute of successful teams. Team building (TB) is one method of developing positive team dynamics. The purpose of this chapter is to review TB research focused on youth sport. Accordingly, this chapter begins by reviewing the conceptual background of TB, including the Personal-Disclosure and Mutual-Sharing approach to TB and the Four-Stage TB Model. The chapter also examines key empirical research focused on TB for youth within the contexts of physical education, exercise, and sport. Insights gained from these sources informed recommendations for developing and implementing TB interventions for youth. Given the worldwide movement towards appropriate developmental opportunities for youth sport participants, this chapter offers helpful recommendations for coaches and others involved in children’s development.
