Abstract

Carbon fiber-foam sandwich composite laminates with embedded Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBGs) are fabricated and their vibration analysis is carried out experimentally and verified using analytical solution. Experiments on sandwich laminated composite with embedded FBGs are carried out to determine the mode shapes for different vibration frequency. Experimental results are compared with traditional accelerometer based techniques and analytical solution to determine the accuracy and reliability of optical fiber sensing method. The results presented in this paper points to a direction that embedded FBGs can be reliably used for dynamic characterisation in sandwich composites, which can lead to the development of health monitoring techniques for structures made out of sandwich composites.
