Abstract

Few would dispute that the role of the school leader is a demanding one. Leaders
today have responsibilities far beyond anything their predecessors experienced.
In many countries they face a rigorous regime of accountability and scrutiny. On top of this, they are managing radical changes in the way schools interact with other agencies and services. Therefore it is little wonder that across many countries there is, or soon will be, a shortage of headteachers and principals.
