Abstract
Introduction: Hand-hygiene is pivotal practice in mitigating the transmission of foodborne pathogens and healthcare-associated infections. However, traditional manual monitoring systems often fail to ensure consistent compliance across food and healthcare industries. Leveraging advanced technologies such as sensors, wearables, and AI-driven systems offers an opportunity to address this challenge.
Purpose: This scoping review evaluates the application and effectiveness of existing and emerging technologies for monitoring hand-hygiene compliance and explores the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) into compliance frameworks.
Methods: A review was conducted from peer-reviewed journal and conference-papers published in IEEE, ACM, Elsevier and Springer from January 2019 - October 2024. Articles were analysed based on the type of technology employed, integration challenges, achievements, and adoption barriers.
Results: Overall 16,003 records were screened; 57 duplicates removed; 192 records were identified eligible, resulting in 40 studies meeting inclusion criteria. Technological innovations such as proximity sensors, RFID-enabled dispensers, and smart wearables have demonstrated measurable improvements in compliance and accuracy in monitoring hand hygiene practices. AI and ML applications have facilitated real-time monitoring, utilizing techniques such as computer vision and predictive analytics. Despite their advantages, these technologies face challenges including high costs, infrastructural demands, and privacy concerns. Tailored AI models embedded within autonomous devices have proven effective in optimizing systems for sector-specific workflows, significantly enhancing usability and efficiency while addressing privacy concerns.
Significance:
Integrating smart technologies into hand hygiene compliance systems can advocate for better food safety standards and public health. This review highlights the need for scalable, cost-effective, privacy preserving solutions and emphasizes the role of AI-driven models in addressing operational barriers. Future research should focus on refining these models for sector-specific implementation and exploring novel solutions for seamless integration into existing workflows and quality assurance.
