Abstract

This paper discusses the Knowledge Economy Skills Scholarship (KESS) doctoral project, which provides a novel approach to control outdoor light pollution by adopting smart science and technology to improve residents quality of life in the built environment and is being undertaken by the first author under the guidance of the other authors. This project will evaluate a source, modifier, and receiver model approach for lighting design to promote health, well-being, and quality of life in built environments. The importance of the research is that there are no other studies that address all these parameters holistically. This innovative research is original and can be considered as groundbreaking research in the area of lighting. The KESS project led by Cardiff Metropolitan University, Cardiff School of Art and Design, is undertaken by the first author and builds upon a context to the academic, scientific, technological challenges to control the light pollution and the corresponding health and well-being of residents in the built environment will be discussed and the expected outcomes. The authors will detail the residents’ quality of life and the impacts upon occupant health and well-being. The methodology and the anticipated results for controlling light pollution, including trespass lighting, will also be discussed. This paper will be useful for academics, researchers, scientists, engineers, consultants, architects, lighting designers, contractors, developers, financial institutions, and government agencies funding to upgrades the outdoor lighting.
