Personal profile
Research interests
My present role as a Principal Lecturer in Professional and Workforce Development at Cardiff Metropolitan University recognises my focus on improving educational design, national accreditation systems and supporting employability, lifelong learning and workforce planning agendas. My work includes the development of accessible education and flexible lifelong learning solutions that tackle structural barriers for non-traditional learners. My focus includes advocating for a balance between theoretical depth and practical application. Whether working with small groups of learners or trying to impact systemic educational change.
My interest in employability and lifelong learning is driven by the desire to create educational experiences that place learners' needs at the centre of my practice, including currently chairing a national Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) Micro-credential Special Interest Group (MIC.SIG), undertaking a board trustee role with the University Association of Lifelong Learning (UALL), chairing a discipline specific European special interest group in Employability and Entrepreneurship for the European Association of Sport Management (EASM), chairing (interim) the UK Professional Development Board for Sport & Physical Activity and chairing a new national Sport & Physical Activity Workforce Research Observatory board.
I have coordinated academic and industry partners in delivering multiple large-scale ERASMUS+, HEFCW and Innovate UK Knowledge Transfer Partnership funding projects focused on employability and lifelong learning projects. I have also previously held a trustee role with ASET the Work-based and Placement Learning Association. These roles and projects have had a core focus to develop inclusive research, education and innovation environments by focusing on capacity building, sharing knowledge and undertaking practice based research, engagement and dissemination activities. I continue to use these experiences as a module leaderon a Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching in Academic Practice (PgC TAP) qualification working with academic and professional service participants to facilitate the development of practice based pedagogic innovation projects, including research design, ethical evaluation, data interpretation, dissemination strategies for outputs and links to ongoing professional development frameworks.
During my fifteen years in Higher Education (HE), I have held scholarly positions delivering business administration, sports management, and post compulsory education with a specialised interest in employability and workforce planning, with multiple nominations for student-led teaching awards, including a university-wide recognition for contribution to student employability in 2013 whilst working at the University of Wales Trinity St David (UWTSD).
I have also worked and volunteered in sport industry settings for over 30 years and have experience in management and strategic leadership functions within higher education, public and social enterprises for the past 23 years. I have previously managed frontline services, events, strategic change programs and continue to contribute to the work of top executive officers and senior academics. I have led the development and delivery of national and local authority sports and physical activity strategies. I have also led local, regional, and national working groups on strategy development, performance management systems and service development and improvement in large public sector departments, national governing bodies of sport and social enterprises. This work has included developing, delivering, and monitoring large-scale strategic plans and partnership funding agreements.
