Personal profile

Research interests

I have worked and volunteered in sport industry settings for over 30 years and have experience in management and strategic leadership functions within higher education, public and social enterprises for the past 23 years. I have previously managed frontline  services, events, strategic change programs and  continue to contribute to the work of top executive  officers and senior academics.

I have led the development and delivery of national  and local authority sports and physical activity  strategies. I have also led local, regional, and national  working groups on strategy development, performance  management systems and service development and improvement in large public sector departments,  national governing bodies of sport and social  enterprises. This work has included developing,  delivering, and monitoring large-scale strategic plans  and partnership funding agreements. These  experiences have provided me with the opportunity to work with, consult, present to, and advise company directors, strategic managers, and political  stakeholders. I presently contribute to the national  sport and physical activity sector as the vice chair of the UK Professional Development Board and Chairperson of the Sport & Physical Activity Workforce Research Observatory.

During my fourteen years in Higher Education (HE), I have held scholarly positions in sports management, with a specialised interest in employability and workforce planning, with multiple nominations for student-led teaching awards, including a university-wide recognition for contribution to student employability in 2013 whilst working at the University of Wales Trinity St David (UWTSD). My present role as a Principal Lecturer in Professional and Workforce Development at Cardiff Metropolitan University recognises my focus on improving educational design, national accreditation systems and supporting employability and workforce agendas. My work has included the development of accessible education and lifelong learning solutions that tackle structural barriers for non-traditional learners.

I have also coordinated academic and industry partners in delivering multiple large-scale European and national funded employability projects. These experiences have helped me refine my teaching philosophy, which is focused on social justice, inclusivity, and transformation. My interest in employability and lifelong learning is driven by the desire to create educational experiences that place learners' needs at the centre of my practice, including chairing a new national QAA Micro-credential Special Interest Group and a discipline specific european wide special interest grouo in Employability and Entrepreneurship for the European Association of Sport Management (EASM).

My focus includes advocating for a balance between theoretical depth and practical application. Whether working with small groups of learners or trying to impact systemic educational change, I aim to develop interventions to help learners achieve their aspirations and build long-term careers that will positively impact their lives.
