Research interests
Robert Mayr (Dr) is a Reader in Linguistics at Cardiff Metropolitan University, where he leads the Centre for Speech, Hearing and Communication Research. He is also operational lead for Research Capacity Building Collaboration (RCBC) Wales, a consortium of six Welsh universities, funded by Health and Care Research Wales, that aims to build research capacity in allied health professions, nursing and pharmacy. His research aims to gain a better understanding of the cognitive, social and interactional factors that affect speech sound development in bilinguals and multilinguals across the lifespan, and their clinical and educational implications. He has been the principal investigator or a collaborator on various research projects, including a British Academy-funded study on socio-phonetic variation in Welsh–English bilinguals, an FWF-funded study on L1 attrition of speech in native English speakers in Austria and an NIH-funded study on speech perception and production in Spanish–English bilingual children. His work has appeared widely in international journals, such as Bilingualism: Language and Cognition, International Journal of Bilingualism, International Journal of Bilingual Education and Bilingualism, Journal of Phonetics, Journal of the International Phonetic Association, Journal of Child Language and Frontiers in Psychology: Language Sciences.
