Personal profile

Research interests

I currently work as a Senior Lecturer in Immunology at Cardiff Metropolitan University. In this role, I teach undergraduate and postgraduate students on our Biomedical Science Degree programmes. I currently lead the MSc module 'Immunology of Human Disease' and I am the pathway lead for the MRes (Health).

My research interests are broad, I am currently working on a number of different projects including:
1. Director of studies for a KESS2 funded/Kidney Wales PhD project 'HCMV Encoded Interleukin-10 (vIL10): Investigating its suitability as a novel marker of viral reactivation in renal transplant patients'
2. The role of IL6/sIL6R in COVID-19
3. IL6/sIL6 in exercise
4. Host pathogen interactions in chronic wounds.

Outreach is a keen passion of mine and I am involved in science communication projects with school age children, something that I find exciting, rewarding and fulfilling.

I am also the Secretary for the British Society for Immunology (South Wales).

Prior to my current role, I worked for over 10 years as a postdoctoral research scientist at Cardiff University in Prof Gavin Wilkinson's/Prof Eddie Wang's viral immunology laboratory. I have an excellent research track record investigating Natural Killer cell responses to Human Cytomegalovirus (HCMV) and mapping novel immunomodulatory functions encoded by this virus. I have also worked as a Pharmacovigilance Officer at Wales Cancer Trials Unit.

I enjoy working as a member of a dynamic and high reaching team and have collaborated with colleagues to produce scientific research of a world class standard.
