Research interests

I currently lead the Mycoplasma and Ureaplasma Group at Cardiff Metropolitan University which focuses on understating the role mycoplasmas and ureaplasmas play in human health and disease.

Over the past 15 years, I have examined the prevalence and mechanisms of antibiotic resistance among mycoplasmas and ureaplasmas of the urogenital tract. Additionally, I have expanded my research to respiratory mycoplasmas, shedding light on Mycoplasma pneumoniae's impact on respiratory infections and investigating the prevalence and antibiotic resistance mechanisms for the emerging pathogen Mycoplasma amphoriforme. More recently I have co-led the first prospective global surveillance study for M. pneumoniae, the ESGMAC Mycoplasma pneumoniae Surveillance (MAPS) study. This study identified where and when M. pneumoniae returned after its absence following the implementation of non-pharmaceutical interventions in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.  Currently, I am leading an international research project to improve molecular surveillance of M. pneumoniae across Europe and beyond.

From 2019 to 2021 I was the Science Officer for the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID) Study Group for Mycoplasma and Chlamydia Infections (ESGMAC) and then took on the role of Chair of the ESGMAC from 2021 – 2023. As part of this role, I established the Early Career Mycoplasma and Chlamydia Researcher (ECMCR) conference in 2022. This online conference was designed to allow early career researchers to present their research in a low-pressure and welcoming environment and build on their presentation skills. This meeting provided a free, inclusive, and accessible platform with representation from 15 different countries spanning six continents. The meeting was run for a second time in March 2024 and will hopefully continue to provide a stage for the next generation of mycoplasma and chlamydia researchers to present their findings.
