Research interests

Ianto Gruffydd is a Lecturer in Phonetics at Cardiff Metropolitan University. He specialises in the sociophonetics of Welsh and Welsh English accents, investigating variation and change, as well as accent perception.

Previously, he led an extensive project measuring the direction of language change in four South Wales communities. His PhD thesis in this field examined the never-before-studied new dialect of Cardiff Welsh, employing ethnographic methods to analyse sociolinguistic variation in teenage secondary school students.

His work also bridges into implicit and explicit language attitudes, using a range of psycholinguistic approaches from his time on an ESRC-funded project investigating three European language contexts. Specifically, he's interested in how language attitudes can predict language use in different regional/minority language communities.
