Research interests
George Karani is a Professor of Environmental Health and Chair,Africa Partnership Initiative. He was born in Kenya and is a holder of BSc. (hons), MSc.(University of Nairobi) and PhD (University of Leeds).
Research group motto is to Address challenges and Opportunities through Partnership to improve quality of life by Involvement of all appropriate stakeholders (API). Projects are on pollution and health, poverty related diseases and sustainable development goals. We work with local, regional and international research partners including Public Health Wales, Cardiff and the Vale & Aneurin University health boards, Universities of Nottingham, Cardiff and South Wales and multiple community groups and industrial partners. Overseas partners located in Cameroon, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Oman, Qatar, Rwanda and Uganda.
Over the last six years, he has published ten research papers and supervised ten research degrees to successful completion. Over the same period, he was an external examiner to nine PhDs, and gave thirteen keynote invited presentations.
Prof. Karani was involved as part of multi-disciplinary team in the setting up of the Air quality monitoring database for Wales, and the National Focus for Chemical Incidents in the UK. He has been a consultant to the World Bank, World Meteorological Organisation and World Health Organisation. His government and public appointments includes as a Member of the Vale Local Health Board, All Wales Review Panel on Continuing Care, Environment Protection Advisory Committee Wales and Advisory Committee Wales.
Prof. Karani is passionate and actively involved in civic mission work having set up, while in collaboration with othertr organisations, a home work club for African and Asian students in Cardiff and Swansea. Since 2004, he is involved with a primary school project in Kenya initiated by Meidrim primary school,Carmathen.
