Research interests

Specialist Professor Carolyn Hayles is a UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) funded Policy Research Fellow, investigating Climate Change Adaptation Pathways with Cadw, the Welsh Government’s Historic Environment Service (2023- 2025).  ​

Carolyn has more than 25 years of experience conducting research in the disciplines of Architecture, Interior Design, Civil Engineering and Construction Management.  Her interests include: Biophilic Design; Design for Health and Wellbeing; Green Building Design; Regenerative and Restorative Design; the Conservation, Repair and Refurbishment of Heritage Buildings; and the impact of Climate Change on the Built Environment; with a particular research interest in the development and delivery of sustainable, climate resilient and adaptive decision-making processes and frameworks.  Carolyn has worked in the UK, USA, Australia, Mediterranean Europe, Hong Kong, and Singapore. Between 2020–23 Carolyn was a Climate Resilience Embedded Research Fellow with Welsh Government, investigating how resilient buildings in the UK and Wales are to the challenges associated with Climate Change.
