Reimagining Scholarly Conferences as Sites of Public Interaction

Historians owe a debt to the locations wherein our narratives emerge. Too often, however, our responsibility in acknowledging that charge – in terms of supporting those communities contained within – has been lackluster. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic shutdowns and the subsequent increase in social isolation, both real and perceived, the imperative for historians to connect the “good stories” uncovered from those spaces with the public sits at a critical juncture. As such, this work considers the academic conference as a potential lynchpin between the two. In particular, this work highlights the importance of shared space. Intentional or unintentional, conflicting or corroborating, the multitude of experiences emanating from shared – and frequently contested – space provides a common ground through which historians and the public can strengthen their relationship.
