Description
This interdisciplinary study examines Welsh national identity through sport. Specifically, our research focuses on rugby fandom and the sport’s role as a cultural site of imagined community. We employ a mixed-methods approach through quantitative, qualitative and historical discourse analysis to explore sociological, historical and sport-focused constructions of national identity. Framed through theories of imagined communities and constructed identities, our research conceptualises homogenous identities of community whilst simultaneously considering the individual. Analysis of Welsh identity, through the Six Nations and Rugby World Cup, contextualises how Welsh sporting support can help us understand a Wales of vibrant culture and cohesive communities
