I’ve just received confirmation that John (a pseudonym) has been awarded Accreditation, my first ‘completion’ as a professional practice supervisor! I’m happy, or at least I feel happy. John’s been a great supervisee, he’s worked hard to go the extra mile in his personal and professional development over the past three years, and undoubtedly he’ll continue to do so into his professional career … he deserves this. While I’m elated for him and satisfied with the outcome, I can’t help but question the impact that I’ve had on his development. What role have I played in John’s learning? What value have I added? How have I facilitated this process? I’ve got that feeling I get when I’m not sure, and this is tainting my satisfaction with a little doubt … self-doubt that I thought I’d overcome a while ago (extract from first author’s reflective diary, October, 2011).
