The school leadership field is particularly susceptible to new labels for leadership that are temporarily popular only to be quickly supplemented with more fashionable ideas or theories. While the field tends to gives the appearance of being fast paced and contemporary, the knowledge base remains relatively undisturbed. The flurry of new ideas in the school leadership field is often manufactured without recourse to systematic research or investigation.

There is a desire to ensure that leadership remains in the limelight irrespective of the fact that what is written in the glossy pamphlets bears little resemblance to the day-to-day practical and emotional reality of being a leader in a school. Most importantly, there is still an emphasis on the school leader rather than the educational leader and an orientation towards generic leadership skills that suit all school situations and leaders at all levels.
