Experiences as a young action researcher: Developing a contemporary sports coaching curriculum

This chapter presents reflections on positionality as an action researcher in relation to social justice teaching and learning. The chapter contents have been derived from previous doctoral work which aimed to develop a more contemporary sport coaching postgraduate curriculum, inclusive of marginal or minority issues within a higher education institution (HEI). Such study introduced issues related to equality, diversity and inclusivity; colour-blindness; White fragility and the impact of silence, in focus groups discussions with a group of senior lecturers. This chapter uses data collected from the aforementioned doctoral work, particularly experiences/reflections of a young female academic to navigate the role of an action researcher to facilitate difficult conversations with senior academic teaching staff. Investigating the difficulties faced as a researcher and the potential barriers to generating positive change around social justice within an HEI will also be discussed.
