abstract = "We examine different types of emergent behaviour that resulted during the recovery efforts of hurricane Katrina. Three case studies are presented, which highlight the novel ways people adapted to the unfolding events around them. From here we acknowledge that social media is being increasingly being utilised as a form of collective intelligence in crises. Suggestions and research questions are provided in terms of how social media and could supplement and influence types of emergent behaviour in future large-scale disasters.",
