This edition of the International Journal of ConsumerSciences (IJCS) is one of two special editions this year, featuring 12 of over 40 papers presented at the 1st Institute of Consumer Sciences (ICSc) InternationalResearch Conference at the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff (UWIC). This was hosted by the School of Applied Sciences at UWIC from the 6–9 July 2003. The overall theme of the conference was Empowering the Consumer in the 21 st Century, with each of the sub-themes of the conference representing broad areas thataffect consumers’ lives today.
