In recent years, video analysis has provided opportunities for coaches to analyse and create innovative systems of play alongside developing football players strategic and tactical understanding during matches (Cuevas et al., 2020, FIFA, 2020). Despite its potential, there has been limited research into the pedagogy (i.e., teaching and learning) of using video analysis to support the development of football team performance (Brümmer, 2019). Studies have highlighted that coaching and specifically player learning is not a linear and straightforward process (Thomas et al., 2021). This challenges the dominant view that coaches simply sharing video analysis of team performance leads unequivocally to developing team’s ability to act with collective intelligence and tactical flexibility during games (e.g., Carling et al., 2005).
